Presented by Stacey Brown, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, Director of HR, MacHaik Management and LaQuita Starr, Regional HR Manager, CarMax

HR Basics is a two-day workshop that introduces you to the field of Human Resources. 

Are you new to HR or to human resources subject matter? Moving from a specialist to generalist position or administrative to exempt?  Has your small company employer asked you to assume an HR role?  This two-day program led by Senior HR Professionals provides an overview of the major areas of HR practice.

Beginning with a review of employment law, you’ll then move through each core HR function to understand the role and responsibilities of HR in each stage of the Employment Life Cycle:
 

  • Recruiting & Selection
  • Compensation & Benefits
  • Employee Relations & Retention
  • Performance Management
  • Training & Development
  • Workplace Planning & Record Keeping


You’ll gain an understanding of the evolving role of HR as a strategic business partner in supporting the company’s mission and goals. Along the way, you’ll begin to build your personal development plan to lead to a proficiency in the field.

Your registration includes a comprehensive workbook** packed full of information, practical considerations, examples and other resources that you’ll be able to use as you move forward in your career.

This workshop will be presented virtually using Zoom video conferencing

To utilize Zoom video conferencing, you will need to have:

1.      A desktop, laptop or mobile device with video camera*
2.      Reliable Internet connection
3.      Audio capability through speakers, mobile device, or telephone
4.      Constant source of power to support 6 hours of internet instruction 

* Video camera is optional, only if you want to be seen during the meeting.

** Workbooks will be delivered to you the Monday prior to the workshop, please provide a good and complete mailing address when registering.

Credit Hours

*The workshop offers 12.25 PDCs for the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP and 12.25 hours of HR (General) credit towards PHR and SPHR recertification requirements.

Presenters

STACEY BROWN, SHRM-SCP, SPHR is the Director of Human Resources for Mac Haik Management (MHM). With multiple affiliate companies including automotive, outdoor media, hotel and restaurant, Stacey is responsible for providing overall human resource initiatives for all entities. In this capacity, she leads talent management, organizational change, leadership development, benefits and compensation for a workforce of 2,000+ employees. Stacey holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communication from The University of Texas, Austin as well an MBA from Texas A&M University, Commerce.

LAQUITA JEAN STARR has been the Regional Human Resources Manager of CarMax, Inc since 2010. CarMax is the nation’s largest retailer of used cars and for 14 consecutive years has been named as one of the FORTUNE 100 Best Companies to Work For. Previously, she spent 10 years with Home Depot, Inc. in a variety of position of increasing responsibility in human resources. LaQuita also serves as Board of Director Vice President at Angels with a Mission, Inc, a community service organization that provide hope and support to the homeless, foster youth, and at risk families.  She sits on the Benefit Review Committee for Fort Bend Junior Service League and is an active volunteer for HR Houston, CarMax Cares, Alzheimer Association, Gulf Coast Blood Center, and Child Advocates of Fort Bend.

PRE-REGISTRATION AND PRE-PAYMENT IS REQUIRED.  WE ARE UNABLE TO ACCOMMODATE LATE REGISTRATIONS, WALK-INS OR PAYMENT AT THE DOOR.

Cancellations may be made with a full refund up to 5 business days prior to the workshop.  Individuals who register and neither cancel nor attend are not eligible for refund or rescheduling.  Substitutions may be made at any time; however, substitutions may incur an additional fee due to differences in the member type, e.g., substituting a non-member for a member registration.
