MORNING PROGRAM 1: Speaking English from a Bilingual Perspective: Improve your Communication Skills*

Presented by Micah Bellieu, CEO and Founder, Fluency Corp  

Attendees will learn effective global communication perspectives to empower their organization to communicate at higher levels. The techniques presented will include specific communication skills for all nationalities, and instruction on how to build interpersonal landscapes to navigate and increase ex-pat communications and productivity. 

MICAH BELLIEU and her team have been creating language programs for Global Fortune 1000 companies since 2008. After studying Spanish, French and Japanese at Boston University, she decided to open Fluency Corp, insanely relevant language training for professionals, with the goal of transforming multilingual organizations. MORNING PROGRAM 2: Immigration Compliance – What’s Coming in 2020*

Worksite investigations, I-9 audits, and criminal and administrative worksite-related arrests have surged over the last few years. The administration has signaled that immigration enforcement and I-9 audits will continue throughout 2020. This session will refresh your knowledge of immigration Form I-9 compliance, including Enforcement, Form I-9 Updates, Form I-9 Audits and the issuance of Social Security No-Match letters.

AVALYN LANGEMEIER is a partner at Foster LLP in our Houston office. Recognized by Who’s Who Legal, she works primarily in corporate immigration; presenting on topics such as nonimmigrant work visas, permanent residency options, and Form I-9 compliance. Avalyn is Board Certified in Immigration and Nationality Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and is licensed to practice in the State of Texas and is an active member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), State Bar of Texas, and State Bar of California.

Luncheon presentation: Survey Results-HR Issues in Houston *

Presented by David Barron, JD, Partner, Cozen O'Conner and Bill Penczak, Chief Practice and Development Officer, Briggs & Veselka

We will present the results of a joint survey among Cozen O'Conner, Briggs & Veselka and HR Houston on five broad issues in Houston's HR environment: technology, diversity, culture, legal issues, and retention/recruiting. .

DAVID BARRON partners with clients to offer practical solutions to labor and employment problems of all sizes and shapes before they end up in litigation. That might mean helping a human resources professional with a complicated disciplinary action or helping a Fortune 500 CEO respond to a union campaign. David understands his clients' businesses and works tirelessly and creatively to make a client's goal his goal. With a focus on partnership in decision making and an emphasis on supervisor training, many of David's clients have seen dramatic drops in employment litigation. Of course, not every dispute can be avoided. Employment disputes can often be high stakes, bitter, and expensive. Unlike many employment lawyers, David is no stranger to a courtroom. Whether it is a non-compete or trade secret case, FLSA collective action, or an unfair labor practice charge at the NLRB, David has experience litigating high profile matters. In fact, because of his substantial trial experience, David is often called upon by clients to assist in complicated litigation outside of the employment realm, and David has successfully won cases across the state of Texas in both state and federal courts. Because of David's common sense approach to labor and employment issues, he is often quoted in newspapers and magazines. He has also appeared as an employment law professional on talk radio and local CBS and Fox affiliates. David is Board Certified in Labor and Employment Law by the state of Texas and has been named a Texas Super Lawyer Rising Star in Texas Monthly magazine. When not helping clients, David can be found leading his son's Boy Scout troop, running a marathon, or hiking on a mountain.

BILL PENCZAK is a marketing and sales professional with more than 25 years of professional services, B2B, consumer packaged goods, retail, high tech, and telecom experience generating sales and consumer connection for some of the country's most prestigious brands. I'm blessed with being both creative and analytical; as such, I can create and analyze research, convert it into actionable strategies, and create innovative marketing programs that generate and retain high margin customer relationships. I've also served as COO of a consulting firm with primary P&L responsibility. My leadership and contributions are evidenced by the fact I’ve been thrice hired by clients and that I have been a shareholder in both the accounting and marketing consulting worlds

Credit Hours

*Submitted to SHRM for Professional Development Credits (PDCs) towards the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP and to HR Certification Institute for HR (General) credits towards PHR and SPHR recertification requirements.

The chapter is recognized by SHRM as a Preferred Provider and all sessions so identified offer PDCs towards the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP. The chapter has also been designated as a provider of HRCI-approved recertification credit. All sessions so identified may be used to meet HRCI recertification requirements.
