Session 1: Thursday, June 4 - Houston's Economy: A Look at Population, Employment and Wages*

Presented by Parker Harvey, Principal Economist, Workforce Solutions 

This presentation will provide an overview on the unprecedented unemployment figures and employment indicators in the 13-county Gulf Coast Region encompassing the Greater Houston area. In addition, learn ways in which the region’s workforce can set itself up for recovery. Our speaker will review a summary of how automation and artificial intelligence is impacting jobs in the current economic downturn and its bearing on Houston’s job market now and in the future. The presentation will conclude with a look at wage data and its potential use in a compensation framework.

For the past five years PARKER HARVEY has served as Principal Economist for the Gulf Coast Workforce Board and Workforce Solutions, which together form the public workforce system for the 13-County Gulf Coast region. He conducts economic studies, regularly communicating with media, local business and community groups about local labor trends.  Prior to his current role, Parker served as Midwest regional economist for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in Chicago. Parker holds a Bachelor’s in economics from the University of Texas at Austin, a Master’s in policy from the London School of Economics and an MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management.

*Submitted to SHRM for 1 Professional Development Credit  (PDCs) towards the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP and to HR Certification Institute for 1 Business credit towards PHR and SPHR recertification requirements.
