HR Basics is a two-day workshop that introduces you to the field of Human Resources.

Are you new to HR or to human resources subject matter? Moving from a specialist to generalist position or administrative to exempt?  Has your small company employer asked you to assume an HR role?  This two-day program led by Senior HR Professionals provides an overview of the major areas of HR practice.

Beginning with a review of employment law, you’ll then move through each core HR function to understand the role and responsibilities of HR in each stage of the Employment Life Cycle:

  • Recruiting & Selection
  • Compensation & Benefits
  • Employee Relations & Retention
  • Performance Management
  • Training & Development
  • Workplace Planning & Record Keeping

You’ll gain an understanding of the evolving role of HR as a strategic business partner in supporting the company’s mission and goals. Along the way, you’ll begin to build your personal development plan to lead to a proficiency in the field.

Your registration includes a comprehensive workbook** packed full of information, practical considerations, examples and other resources that you’ll be able to use as you move forward in your career.

Almost 25 years ago, TRACY FRAZIER landed her first job in the HR profession as a recruiter.  As a recent graduate of English Literature, she experienced “on the job” training.  As she grew in her career, Frazier developed a strong love for employment law and HR development, and transitioned to a generalist role with an HR Director who was heavily involved with the local and state professional associations.  This was a key hallmark in her career, as he exposed her to the concept of volunteering within the profession in order to “give back”.  She was awarded the Tom Burke Award for Distinguished Professional in Human Resources by HR Houston in May 2016.  She currently serves as Head of HR for American Omni Trading Company. Frazier earned both the SHRM – Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certifications and holds a Master of Science degree in Human Resources Development from Texas A&M University.

KIM GARCIA, EdD, SHRM-SCP, SPHR is currently the Vice President, HR for Quanex Building Products. Kim has 20 years of professional HR experience in various industries, including as VP, HR at Memorial Hermann Health System (healthcare), HR Director at Direct Energy (electricity utility) and Sr HR Director, US at Air Liquide (industrial/medical gases). She has held HR certifications since 2003 and has served on the board of HR Houston for several years. Kim holds a BA in Psychology and Spanish from Rice University, an MBA from the University of Houston, and an EdD in Interdisciplinary Leadership from Creighton University.
